Burnham data recovery. The busiest station on this stretch of line, and one copy of the file.

Burnham Parish Council calls it a village in south Buckinghamshire on rising ground near the Thames, and the High Street still runs north to south through the middle of it. The address says Slough; the council is Buckinghamshire; those are two different things and people here will say so. What sets the rhythm is the station — 1.726 million entries and exits in 2024/25, a ticket office staffed seven days a week, Elizabeth line trains to Paddington, the West End and the City. That gives the town two sorts of customer. There are the High Street trades, dentists and opticians, solicitors and estate agents, salons and the vehicle repair shops, each running on one back-office machine or a small NAS in a stockroom holding appointment systems, conveyancing files and the card reconciliation HMRC will eventually ask about. And there are the commuter households whose working files and photographs live on one laptop that goes up the line and back. Both send work here in the same way, a tracked and insured parcel, and nothing at all is charged for the first look.

A Burnham job, end to end.

Ancient woodland next door, and dated evidenceBurnham Beeches belongs to the City of London Corporation and carries three designations at once — SSSI, National Nature Reserve and Special Area of Conservation. The arboriculturists, ecologists and woodland contractors working it hold photographs, traces and counts that are evidence only while their dates hold good.
Nothing is collected, from anywhereNo van, no counter, no unit in Burnham and none in Maidenhead. You post it yourself, tracked and insured, to Guildford Data Recovery on Guildford Business Park, GU2 8XH, and weekday drop-offs are taken there in person if that suits better. The parcel coming back is paid for at this end.
Send the set, not just the one that stoppedAn external drive in its own enclosure may go whole, and so may a NAS unit. Neither is true of a server or a RAID array. Take the disks out one by one, write a bay number on each, and put in the member that failed first as well; nothing is reconstructed without the complete set.
One figure, and then no surprisesA camera card or a USB stick comes in at £250 + VAT. One drive is the £300 + VAT band. Add a second disk — or send a NAS, a RAID, a server — and £500 + VAT is where it opens. Video recorders, CCTV and DVR alike, have a band of their own at £400 + VAT. The diagnosis ahead of all that is free, and the written figure afterwards does not move.

What Burnham rings up about.

Is there anywhere in Burnham to hand a drive over?

No. Not on the High Street, not at the station, and not in Maidenhead either. Work of this kind belongs on one bench with the right equipment behind it rather than spread over shopfronts, and the post covers the distance perfectly well: a tracked, insured parcel given to the post on a weekday afternoon is generally opened next working morning. Return carriage is paid, and the label has to read Guildford Data Recovery.

The practice cannot book a patient in until this is back. How fast?

Say that on the first call and the case is flagged before the parcel even arrives: it is opened on arrival, imaged right through that working day rather than queued behind other jobs, and given a timescale you can plan around once the diagnosis will bear one. Weekdays, 9am to 5:30pm, on 0800 6890668; what actually sets the pace is set out on the emergency page.

Our survey work is tied to a season. Do the dates survive?

They do. Everything is worked from images of the original media, so file dates, camera metadata and GPS tags come back exactly as they were written — which is what matters when a tree survey, a bat record or an invertebrate count only counts for the window it was taken in. Nothing gets re-dated, re-saved or tidied up in passing.

There is a small NAS in the stockroom. Whole, or in pieces?

Whole. A NAS unit may be posted as it stands, and so may an external drive in its own enclosure. A server or a RAID array is the opposite case: those come apart and travel as bare disks, marked up in bay order, with every member in the box. Whichever it is, ring before anything is unplugged.

One tracked parcel off the High Street, and we begin.

Nothing is decided until the free diagnosis is in: leave the device off, and tell us what happened to it.
