Hard drive recovery in Maidenhead. The click is a fault report, not a verdict.

What happens in the next hour counts for more than the fault itself, because a disk that has lost its heads, its motor, its board or its firmware will not mend itself by being switched on. Leave it off, post it in from Maidenhead, and let the bench find which of the four it is.

Nothing unusual about a failed hard drive: it is routine work at our bench.

Nothing matches? Use the triage →
If you post it in: use a tracked, insured service addressed to our secure intake lab, and the return leg is paid at our end; if you would rather check the packing first, an engineer will go through it by phone. Each step is set out on the postage page.

The hard drive makes we see most on the bench.

SeagateBarraCuda · FireCuda · IronWolf · SkyHawk · Exos — the brand that arrives here more than any other.
Western DigitalBlue and Black · Red and Red Plus · Purple · Gold · Ultrastar — the other half of what comes in.
ToshibaL200 in laptops · P300 in desktops · N300 and X300 · MG in datacentres — a steady third place on this bench.
Brands long goneIBM, Hitachi and HGST, Fujitsu, Maxtor, Quantum — none of them made for years, yet they reach the bench most weeks.

Booked in, then assessed at no cost Free

Nothing becomes chargeable until you have said yes to it. Each item takes a case number of its own the moment it arrives, an engineer establishes what has actually failed, and you are given a candid view of which files stand a realistic chance of returning. The single quote that follows is fixed, written down, and costs nothing.

Diagnosis at no costOne fixed quote, in writingNothing signed
02

Nothing before the image

A hardware imager takes the drive first, reading round the weak areas at its own pace instead of hammering them, and no repair work begins until that copy sits on our storage.

03

Repair what actually broke

A matched donor supplies the head stack, a seized motor is released, and where the board has burnt out your own drive's ROM is transplanted onto it.

Matched donor partsThe drive's own ROM retained
04

Rebuilt, then verified

All of it is done on the copy, where the file system is put back together and the recovered list reaches you before anything is charged.

Assembled on the copyNothing is written to your disk
05

Opened, verified, and sent home

Nothing is billed until you have seen the recovered file list in full and told us to go ahead. What comes back arrives on new media, with the return journey at our cost, and the case stays open at this end until you have opened every file yourself.

What tends to show up first

  • A Seagate with a damaged translator can be mechanically sound and still report 0GB, because the map from logical to physical sectors lives in the service area, where no consumer tool reaches.
  • A WD or HGST board is married to its own drive — the adaptive parameters sit in a chip on that board, so an identical PCB bought online will not bring the disk back unless the original ROM is moved across.
  • A dropped 2.5" Toshiba tends to stick: the heads settle on the platter and hold fast, so the motor strains, hums, and the disk stays still.
  • The 2009 Barracuda 7200.11 remains the clearest case: a firmware bug locked otherwise healthy Seagate drives, and a machine that booted on Monday saw nothing on Tuesday, with every sector still on the platters. Firmware failures now follow the same pattern.

How likely is a drive to fail in a year? The one substantial public dataset is Backblaze's Drive Stats, and for 2025 it records 1.36% annualised across more than 344,000 datacentre disks, down from 1.55% the year before. Domestic and office drives run gentler hours, though when they do fail they tend to announce it much later.

From the casebook, lately.

Two dead heads between a family firm and fifteen years of records

Two heads had failed, and nothing inside had turned in weeks. With a donor head stack fitted, the first imaging pass took 96% off, and the ledgers, invoices and photographs all went back checked.

96% recovered4 days from arrival

Before it comes to the lab.

Do these now

  • Switch it off and keep it off
  • Say what the machine was doing at the time
  • Wrap it properly; post it insured and tracked
  • Tell us which folders matter most

Things best not done

  • Repeated power cycles in hope of one more read
  • Running CHKDSK, fsck or any repair utility on it
  • Opening the case to look inside
  • The freezer, a tap on the desk, a board off eBay

The questions that arise most often.

If it clicks, are the files already lost?

Seldom. The noise reports that the heads can no longer track, which says nothing about the platters beneath them. With a matched donor stack and unhurried, low-speed imaging, most of these drives give up most of their contents. What harms them is being switched on again.

Someone else has had it open already. Should I still send it?

In most cases yes, provided you say exactly what was done. Once a drive has been opened outside clean conditions, no price is given until the platters have been examined, and contamination may take the job outside no-recovery-no-fee.

What does a hard drive recovery come to?

The diagnosis costs nothing, and no chargeable work starts until a written figure sits in front of you. A logical fault sits at the bottom of the range; a job needing donor parts and clean-air work sits higher. The price is agreed first.

Do you still take old IDE drives?

Yes. IDE, early SATA and SAS disks arrive most weeks; their age only changes which adapters and imagers come out.

Switched off, it keeps every chance it has.

Each further power-up asks more of a drive that has already begun to fail. Open the case first and let the free diagnosis tell you what is left.
