In everyday terms.
A drive that still sounds entirely normal yet has vanished is telling you where not to look. Mechanical failure gives notice first: transfers slow, an unfamiliar note appears, the letter comes and goes for a fortnight. An overnight disappearance with the motor still turning points instead at the electronics that present the disk to the computer, and in a portable case that means the bridge board more often than not. With two VAT returns and a year-end due inside two weeks, the difference between those two answers was the difference between a nuisance and a lost practice, so the job went to the head of the queue.

The bare disk reached the bench inside an hour of the parcel being opened. It answered everything asked of it properly: a steady motor, firmware replying without delay, sample reads good from every head. With the mechanism cleared, the bridge board stood condemned by elimination, and imaging began the same morning.

On these units the encryption key lives on the USB board itself, so a failed one cannot merely be discarded. Only the USB half had died; addressed directly on the bench the board still responded, and it remained part of the imaging chain, with the volume presenting as it always had.
Verify to her deadlines rather than ours
She sent over a list of what fell due and when, and verification followed it. The two VAT sets falling due first were checked one ledger at a time and released ahead of the remainder, which were confirmed behind them. What a filing deadline wants is the correct folders, not the complete set.
How the job closed.
Not a ledger was missing, and both returns were filed a day inside the deadline. One habit changed as a result: the live client files are copied to a second drive every evening before the laptop is closed.
