A Clean SMART Report, and a Test It Kept Failing.
The IdeaPad was already promised to a buyer, which is how a routine wipe became a case. The maker’s own diagnostics, run before erasing it, produced two findings that cannot both stand: the health check passes and the long scan quits on an error, every attempt
. His conclusion was right — the machine itself is fine, so the fault has to sit in the disk
— and what he needed was three folders.

In everyday terms.
Believe the test that went and looked. SMART is a self-assessment, in which the drive measures itself against thresholds its maker set with a generous margin, so it can go on reporting good health while carrying a great deal of genuine wear. An extended test is a different exercise altogether, because it reads the surface from end to end and stops at whatever it cannot get through. That is how both answers can be honest and still point opposite ways, and why the disagreement itself is the thing worth acting on. Most disks give no notice at all before they go; this one gave plenty.
What the bench used here.
How a job is handled →| Tool | Why we used it | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| ACE Lab PC-3000 Express | Read the service logs and defect tables that no SMART summary reports | Reaches the vendor-specific commands that ordinary ATA has no way of issuing |
| DeepSpar Disk Imager 4 | Imaged in two passes, taking the cooperative areas first and mapping the slow band | Head map first, then head-by-head reads, holding resets, timeouts and the power line steady |
| R-Studio Technician | Extracted the three folders from the image and opened every file in turn | Its file-system coverage is wide and its array rebuilds hold up |
The lab work.
Read past the headline verdict
Under the pass mark the picture was less comfortable. Reallocated sectors had been climbing steadily for close to a year, a further set of addresses sat pending judgement, and one band of the platter returned its data at a fraction of the speed of everything around it. Not one count had reached its allowance, so the drive carried on declaring itself well. A good many disks finish quietly in that gap.
Three folders were asked for; the whole disk was copied
Fetching three folders on demand would have sent the heads back and forth across a surface already giving way, since the files themselves lay scattered over every platter. Reading the disk end to end in a single sweep costs the mechanism far less, and the difficult band was deferred to a closing pass instead. It also banks the rest of the contents while the drive is still willing to part with them.
A file list proves nothing; open them
Letters, spreadsheets and photographs came out of the finished image, and every one of them was opened rather than counted, because a name in a directory tells you very little about what sits behind it. The sectors that refused to read were mapped against the file table as well, and not one of them landed inside anything he had asked for.
How the job closed.
The three folders went out to Bourne End checked, with a full image of everything else held on file. A new SSD went into the IdeaPad before it was sold. The old disk had been declining considerably faster than its own report card would admit.

Does any of that match your case?
Nothing needs deciding until the diagnosis is back: switch the device off, send it in, and let the findings settle it.
