The SD Card Lost Its Corner.
Twelve months of watching the forecast had at last produced two clear nights under dark skies in Northumberland
, and the card came home with every frame on it. What it would not do was come out of a tight reader in Slough. A screwdriver went in, the card gave way before the slot did, and the plastic broke away beside the gold contacts
. The fragment went under the bench and was never seen again. From then on no reader would even see a card in the slot
.

In everyday terms.
Most of an SD card is packaging. The working part is a single moulded block in which the controller and the memory are cast together, connected to the gold pads by traces that run close to the corner he snapped off. Breaking that corner usually costs you the wiring rather than the storage, in much the same way that a torn-off door handle leaves the room behind it untouched. The lost fragment, which he had taken badly, made no difference to the work. A fracture also gives evidence under a lens, and this one had spent its energy long before it came anywhere near the die.
What the bench used here.
How a job is handled →| Tool | Why we used it | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Rusolut Visual NAND Reconstructor | Put the raw dump into page order and corrected the ECC | Turns a raw NAND dump into readable files: ECC, XOR, page order, reassembly |
| IR preheater & BGA rework station | Controlled low heat to lift the coating from the test pads without harming the memory | Lifts the NAND off the board and reballs it, keeping the heat away from the stored data |
| PC-3000 Flash | Identified the monolith in the library and settled the pinout before powering it | Reads the NAND chips directly, matched against a maker-ID library that is kept up to date |
The lab work.
Read the break before doing anything
With the broken piece gone, the card itself had to supply the evidence, and under the stereo microscope it gave a clear account: a bite taken out of the contact block, traces cut off where that block had been, and a crack that had stopped a long way before the die. Read that way, an alarming card turned into an ordinary chip job.
Take the service pads as the way in
Underneath a monolith sits a set of service pads, put there for the factory’s use and for nobody else’s, and no two manufacturers lay them out alike. Nothing is published, so this layout was worked out by probing. Wires finer than a hair were soldered to the few pads that count, and the memory replied along a route the fracture had never reached.
Make files out of what the chip returns
Photographs are not what comes off a chip. What comes off is page after page of data, in whatever order the controller used. Error correction is applied first. After that the XOR mask has to be stripped and the page order reconstructed, and names and folders return only after a filesystem is rebuilt over the result. Closing that distance is bench work, which is what a reader cannot do.
How the job closed.
Every light frame from both nights was opened and inspected, the calibration frames along with them. The card itself is finished, though that no longer concerns him.
More of the jobs we've closed.
Filed on the Memory cards shelf.
Does any of that match your case?
Nothing needs deciding until the diagnosis is back: switch the device off, send it in, and let the findings settle it.
