MHDR / Casebook / Ten Years of Files Apple Would Not Touch

Lab record · Mac & Apple · MHD-2025-7110

A Decade of Files, and Only a Swap on Offer.

A grey screen, then a folder with a question mark flashing in it, and the MacBook Pro was finished. Nobody at the counter pretended otherwise: parts are what we change, not what we read. A 2011 machine sits well outside the window where parts are still offered anyway. The letting agency the laptop ran had worked from a spare room in Beaconsfield for ten years, and the disk held a picture of every property we have ever managed along with the tenancy paperwork right back to the beginning, kept nowhere else.

In everyday terms.

No criticism of the shop is intended. A service counter is in the business of naming a fault and selling the part that cures it, and she was given both, honestly. Getting words off a mechanism that has already stopped is another trade altogether: donor parts, filtered air, and imaging equipment no retail counter has floor space for. Age worked in two directions here. Nothing from 2011 appears on a current parts list, and that is that. Magnetic surfaces, though, keep no calendar. Whatever was recorded on them remains recorded, and a mechanism coaxed back into service for one rehearsed pass will generally surrender it. An old disk tolerates a single attempt and takes revenge on the second, so the skill lies in not wasting the first.

The lab work.

01

Take the measure of a 2011 mechanism first

That the heads were dead was established early, but the examination carried on regardless — spindle bearing, the state of the surfaces, and the defect history a disk accumulates sitting under a printer in a warm room. Every reading pointed the same way, towards restraint: no exploratory spin-ups, nothing attempted in hope. If the mechanism had one run left in it, that run was going to be rehearsed.

02

A shelf donor that had to agree on three counts

Nobody orders parts for a disk of this vintage; you go and look for them. Ours came off our own donor shelf, and it had to match the patient on preamp, firmware generation and family — the label number opens that comparison rather than settling it. Fitted under laminar flow, the drive read once more, but unevenly: the uppermost surface was sluggish from the first pass onwards.

03

Slow passes, then a rebuild on the copy alone

Imaging went round by round at a deliberately slow rate, the weak head held back to the end and rested between turns; a faint contact ring on that surface accounted for its behaviour. Reconstruction happened on the image alone, and the HFS+ volume stood up as a proper structure — one folder to a property, dates as they were — rather than a pile of numbered files.

How the job closed.

The decade of photographs and tenancy paperwork came back verified, in order and opening properly, short of a small run of images that had lived on the weak surface. Those we listed by filename rather than passing over them, and most are exteriors she can photograph again. It travelled home on a fresh disk with a duplicate, and the MacBook has been honourably retired to a drawer.

The point: When a counter says 'beyond repair' it usually means 'beyond replacing'. A spares list runs out long before the data does.

Does any of that match your case?

Nothing needs deciding until the diagnosis is back: switch the device off, send it in, and let the findings settle it.
