Lights On, and the Disk Had Gone.
A garden centre out on the A308 towards Windsor lost its supply for the morning after a contractor’s digger went through a cable. Once it came back, the office desktop announced Default boot device missing
, and the BIOS agreed with it — no disk on either channel
. Behind that screen: the plant database, nine years of supplier records, and every image used on the website.

In everyday terms.
Equipment rarely dies during an outage; it dies at the moment the supply comes back, because restoration is seldom clean and that ragged first second finishes off machines that sat through the dark hours perfectly happily. Drive designers expect this. A small sacrificial component bridges the power input with a single purpose — to give way ahead of everything else — and having done so it leaves the board silent. What none of that touches is the recording itself. Files on a hard disk exist as magnetic orientation on the platters; orientation holds no charge and a spike has nothing to grip. That is why a disk missing after a power cut is usually intact storage sitting behind ruined electronics.
What the bench used here.
How a job is handled →| Tool | Why we used it | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| ACE Lab PC-3000 Express | Verified the board repair — identity, defect lists and SMART history all reading back | Reaches the vendor-specific commands that ordinary ATA has no way of issuing |
| PC-3000 Data Extractor | Took the surface copy afterwards, configured from the firmware’s own tables | The PC-3000's imaging module, working under firmware-level control |
| R-Studio Technician | Opened the NTFS volume out of the image and proved every folder complete | Its file-system coverage is wide and its array rebuilds hold up |
The lab work.
Find how deep into the circuit the surge went
A protection component that has already given its life is easy to find under magnification and tells you little. What matters is where the surge went next. Enough energy carries past it into the interface chip, or into the driver that turns the motor, so every remaining stage was traced before the board was passed as sound — the difference between a repair that holds and a drive that quits mid-copy.
Take the original ROM across to the donor board
Working electronics came from a donor of the same revision, but the intelligence had to be salvaged from the ruined one. Its ROM carries adaptive values written at the factory for this particular head stack across these particular surfaces. Skip that transfer and you get a drive that spins up sweetly, sounds entirely well, and hands back rubbish.
Let the defect tables configure the imager
With the donor fitted, the Barracuda reported itself correctly as a 2TB disk, and its own tables went into the imager’s setup before the first sector came off. The copy then completed without a single reread, which is exactly how a surface reads when the damage was only ever electrical.
How the job closed.
The whole set was verified and returned on a fresh disk with the bank holiday weekend still ahead. Both machines, till and office, now run through a UPS, and the supplier records copy nightly to a second drive.

Does any of that match your case?
Nothing needs deciding until the diagnosis is back: switch the device off, send it in, and let the findings settle it.
